Intelligent biocide applications to protect your water systems from biological contamination – Ferrocid®/Dilurit®
Industrial water systems often represent an ideal place for the growth and multiplication of microorganisms. This microorganisms can cause numerous problems in aqueous systems, including slime deposits, microbiologically induced corrosion, unpleasant odors and hazardous gases. Pulp preparation and circulating water systems are also heavily loaded by a large number of dissolved organic components. These dissolved components, in particular the organic ingredients, are a favorable basis for the growth of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi). This growth ("slime formation") is additionally promoted by essential boundary conditions of modern driving modes (neutral pH range, temperatures between 40 and 60°C.)
Today, severe slime problems have often been found. The deposit formation leads to various problems on the production side, and on the other hand to the quality of the end products. Typical problems are:
- Slime formation
- Deposits in the machine circuit
- Machine breaks
- Odor pollution
- Deterioration of drainage
- Clogging filters and screens
- Impairment of water absorption of dry felts
- Blow- and floating sludge in wastewater
- Increased microbial corrosion
Therefore quality losses in the final product are achieved by
- dots and holes
- increased germ exposure.
Odors are perceived when volatile organic substances (evaporating at ambient temperature) form in the system, which generally have a particular intrinsic odor. Organosulfur compounds, but also organic acids and carbonyl compounds, are unpleasant to smell most unpleasant.
As a consequence, a treatment with biocides, is often essential. Treatment programmes have to significantly reduce the bacterial content (TBC) in the water and to control biofilm formation. Aspects of minimising negative impacts on the system and environmental compatibility like AOX, COD, degradability, nitrogen and phosphorus content have to be taken into account.
Oxidizing and Non-oxidizing Biocides:
For the treatment of water systems with biocides of different types, a range of products and methodologies are available. One significant distinction is a division into oxidizing and non-oxidizing agents.
Note: To improve efficiency, biocides can be combined with bio-dispersants which are able to attack the protective layer of biofilms and disperse dead biomass.
They function by penetrating through the cell membranes while oxidising and thus modifying the cell metabolism. The action is non-selective. Learn more by visiting our innovations page Dilurit® BC S.
They react specifically with components of the microbial cell or by inactivation of certain metabolic processes. Their action is selective and in general not dependant on pH value.
Dilurit®, Ferrocid®, Turbanion® and Kuriverter®: for an effective control of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi and algae) and macro-organisms (e.g. mussels) in industrial recirculating water systems and membrane filtration units.
Attention: Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
