Biocides and disinfectants to protect your water systems from biological contamination – Ferrocid®/Dilurit®

Industrial water systems often represent an ideal place for the growth and multiplication of microorganisms, due to e.g. the presence of nutrients, favourable temperatures, high residence time and ratio of surface area to system volume. 

With these conditions, a high bacterial proliferation can lead to biofilm development and subsequent problems like decrease of system performance and material damage by corrosion (MIC). In addition, bacterial biofilms accumulating on the surface can significantly reduce the heat transfer and increase the frictional resistance in tubes. Biofilms on pipe walls may also cause serious sanitary problems in water systems as they provide a habitat for pathogenic microorganisms (like Legionella pneumophila which spreads through aerosols and causes legionnaires disease).

As a consequence, a treatment with biocides, e.g. in cooling systems, paper and pulp mills, is often essential. Treatment programmes have to significantly reduce the bacterial content (TBC) in the water and to control biofilm formation. Aspects of minimising negative impacts on the system and environmental compatibility like AOX, COD, degradability, nitrogen and phosphorus content have to be taken into account.

Oxidizing and Non-oxidizing Biocides:

For the treatment of water systems with biocides of different types, a range of products and methodologies are available. One significant distinction is a division into oxidizing and non-oxidizing agents.

Note: To improve efficiency, biocides can be combined with bio-dispersants which are able to attack the protective layer of biofilms and disperse dead biomass.

Oxidizing Biocides: 

  • They function by penetrating through the cell membranes while oxidising and thus modifying the cell metabolism. The action is non-selective. Learn more by visiting our innovations page Dilurit® BC S.

Non-oxidizing Biocides:

  • They react specifically with components of the microbial cell or by inactivation of certain metabolic processes. Their action is selective and in general not dependant on pH value.

Dilurit®, Ferrocid®, Turbanion® and Kuriverter®: for an effective control of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi and algae) and macro-organisms (e.g. mussels) in industrial recirculating water systems and membrane filtration units.
