Background

In the case of missing online monitoring and control technologies, many wastewater treatment (WWTPs) operators overpass the regulatory discharge limits due to over-dosing the required treatment chemicals. This situation misuses, not only the chemicals but also a significant amount of money.

A European car producer was managing the WWTP through hand-samplings, laboratory analyses, visual control of the discharge and “just-in-case” product dosages. This pattern drove to three main problems:

  • Improper products dosages
  • Discharging parameters above the limits (fees, penalties)
  • High costly water treatment program
