Improving process water quality and treatment costs with Kurita’s SSK System
Background
The manufacturing process of board and fluting paper has greater raw materials stresses than other types of paper. The so-called old corrugated cardboard contains in particular starch and in addition a high inorganic load which serves as a food source of microorganisms. In the manufacture of board paper, problems have been encountered which may be attributable to microorganisms, such as e.g. the deterioration of paper strength due to degenerated raw materials, the higher consumption of paper strength agents, sizing agents, and other wet-end chemicals. Also in the summer, the foul smell of hydrogen sulfide may be attributable to microorganisms.
The treatment of such heavy loaded system with only an oxidizing biocide system is a very cost intensive. In combination with an aeration system, several benefits could be achieved. Kurita’s combination of such an application is named SSK System.
Objectives
- Improvement of the water quality by increasing the concentration of oxygen inside the process water.
